Day-case surgery
Home the same day — who is a candidate?
More and more joint replacements are done as day-case surgery, with patients home the same day. I established Finland's first dedicated day-case arthroplasty unit — here is how we decide whether it is right for you.
Why it works
Modern anaesthesia, effective pain relief and early movement mean many patients can walk and go home within hours of surgery. Recovering at home is comfortable and, for suitable patients, just as safe as staying overnight.
You may be a good candidate if…
- You are in generally good health, with any long-term conditions well controlled.
- You are motivated to get moving soon after surgery and to follow a clear recovery plan.
- Someone can be with you at home for the first day or so.
- Your home is reasonably manageable to move around in as you recover.
When an overnight stay is the safer choice
Day-case is not the goal for everyone, and there is no prize for going home fastest. Other illnesses, limited support at home, or particular surgical complexity can make a planned overnight stay the wiser, safer path.
We decide together. At your appointment we look at your health, home situation and goals, and choose the pathway — same-day or overnight — that is safest and most comfortable for you.
