Dr. Rami Madanat reading the Journal of Arthroplasty

Dr. Rami Madanat is Adjunct Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery specialised in reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee. He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and instructed several doctoral dissertations. He has presented the results of his research at numerous national and international meetings. Dr. Madanat’s research has focused on improving outcomes and reducing complications in both hip and knee replacement as well as in the treatment of fractures. He is a peer reviewer for several leading orthopaedic journals including the Journal of Arthroplasty, Acta Orthopaedica, BMJ Open, the Bone and Joint Journal and CORR.

Dr. Madanat earned his Medical Doctoral degree from Turku University in Finland and then completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Specialisation at Helsinki University Hospital. He completed the rigorous EBOT examination and is a Fellow of the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology. Following specialization, he was accepted for a research fellowship at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital at the prestigious Harris Orthopaedic Laboratory in Boston, USA. During his training he has also visited the ENDO-Klinik in Hamburg, Germany, the Hvidovre hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark, as well as the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

Currently Dr. Madanat leads the Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Centres across five Terveystalo hospitals — Helsinki, Turku, Oulu, Pori and Joensuu — and heads the Terveystalo Accident and Injury Clinic in Helsinki. He established Terveystalo's arthroplasty unit in Helsinki, including Helsinki's first dedicated day-case joint replacement unit.

Dr. Madanat enjoys travelling and has lived in six countries on four continents. He is an avid swimmer, gym-goer and tennis-player.

Specialist accreditation

Certified Arthroplasty Specialist — Tekonivelkirurgian asiantuntijalääkäri

Dr. Madanat holds the formal Arthroplasty Specialist accreditation awarded by the Finnish Arthroplasty Society (SAPLY) — a qualification held by relatively few surgeons in Finland. Beyond full orthopaedic and trauma specialisation, it requires several years of dedicated training at high-volume arthroplasty units, hundreds of joint replacements — both primary and complex revision surgery — performed personally, and extensive theoretical study in implant materials, biomechanics and national registry science.

In practice, it means your operation is performed by a surgeon formally recognised for focused expertise in hip and knee replacement.

Areas of expertise

Joint replacement — and orthopaedic injury care.

Hip and knee replacement is the core of my practice. Through the Terveystalo Accident and Injury Clinic, I also treat general orthopaedic problems, fractures, and sports-related injuries.

🔵

Hip replacement

Primary total hip replacement for osteoarthritis, focused on long-term survivorship and function.

🦿

Knee replacement

Total and partial knee replacement, tailored to your anatomy for precise alignment and lasting function.

Day-case surgery

An expert in day-case arthroplasty — I established Helsinki's first day-case joint replacement unit, where carefully selected patients go home the same day.

🔧

Complex cases & second opinions

Complex and challenging cases, and second opinions — grounded in registry data and international collaboration.

🩺

General orthopaedics & injuries

Assessment and treatment of general orthopaedic conditions and injuries — fractures, sprains, dislocations and soft-tissue injuries — at the Accident and Injury Clinic.

🏃

Sports injuries

Sports and overuse injuries — ligament and meniscal injuries, muscle strains and tendon problems — with experience treating injuries from tennis, martial arts, ice hockey, American football, rugby, running, soccer and skating. Safely back to your sport.

Precision surgery, grounded in evidence.

Every operation is planned around your anatomy and carried out with meticulous attention to detail — because the small details shape both the outcome and how long a joint replacement lasts.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a modern hip replacement last?

Recent global registry data shows modern hip implants have around 93% survivorship at 20 years and a projected ~92% at 30 years — a major improvement over older materials. Your individual situation is best discussed at your consultation.

Could I go home the same day?

Many suitable patients now do. I lead Helsinki's first dedicated day-surgery arthroplasty unit, where a large share of patients go home the same day with a clear recovery plan. Suitability is assessed individually.

When is joint replacement actually indicated?

Conservative (non-surgical) care remains the first-line treatment for osteoarthritis. Replacement is considered when symptomatic osteoarthritis no longer responds adequately to conservative measures. We decide together, based on your symptoms and goals.

Research & publications

Evidence is the foundation.

Over fifty peer-reviewed publications and two book chapters, spanning topics that matter to patients — with long-standing international collaborations and four supervised doctoral dissertations.

Research themes

  • How long implants last — bearing surfaces & survivorship
  • Going home safely — day-case surgery & discharge
  • Less pain, better recovery — anaesthesia & pain management
  • Preventing infection and complications
  • Fracture treatment & recovery
  • Long-term outcomes & registry insights

My doctoral dissertation examined the treatment of distal radius fractures. I have also carried out research at Stanford University and at Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard.
