Patient guide

Your recovery, week by week

Recovery is a gradual climb, not a single leap. Here is roughly what to expect — everyone heals at their own pace.

First days

You will be up and walking with support very soon after surgery — early movement is part of the treatment. Many suitable patients go home the same day or the next.

Weeks 1–2

Walk a little, often, using your aids. Keep the wound clean and dry. Do your exercises. Some swelling and bruising is normal.

Weeks 3–6

You gradually need less pain relief and fewer walking aids. Movement and strength improve week by week.

6–12 weeks and beyond

Most people are back to their normal routines. Your team will advise when it is safe to drive and return to work.

When to call for advice

If something worries you, contact your care team — or emergency services if it is urgent.
